SC Ports consolidating container operations amid trade uncertainty
The South Carolina Ports Authority has announced short-term plans to consolidate container operations at its Wando and North Charleston terminals and pause operations at the Leatherman Terminal effective Aug. 1.
All three terminals are located at the Port of Charleston. The decision comes as the freight transportation industry faces headwinds, an uncertain trade forecast and tempered volumes, SC Ports officials said in a press release. By consolidating operations to two terminals, SC Ports will be able to focus on cost competitiveness, retaining current business and attracting new customers for long-term growth, they added. No reopening date for the Leatherman Terminal was announced. SC Ports opened the first of three phases of the Leatherman Terminal in 2021; expansion work on the terminal continues. CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway serve the Port of Charleston. SC Ports also operates Inland Port Greer, which is served by NS, and Inland Port Dillon, which is served by CSX.
