CPKC receives 170th Tier 4 locomotive from Wabtec
This week, CPKC took delivery of the 170th and final Wabtec Evolution Series ET44AC Tier 4 locomotive in the railroad’s order with Wabtec, marking a milestone in the railroad's multiyear, CA$800 million capital program to renew their road locomotive fleet. Wabtec delivered the first locomotive in the order in May 2025.
“These locomotives are a smart investment in the strength and reliability of our fleet,” said Baden Tidd, vice president, mechanical-locomotive at CPKC, in a press release. “They give our crews modern, fuel-efficient power to move our customers’ freight safely and efficiently.” Each of the new locomotives features advanced traction control, efficient cooling systems and U.S. EPA-certified Tier 4 diesel engines. The locomotives are expected to significantly reduce air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter compared to Tier 3 diesel locomotives and enhance fuel economy and reliability, CPKC officials said. CPKC will continue its fleet renewal with 65 new Tier 4 locomotives from Progress Rail, to be built at the company's plant in Muncie, Indiana; 30 new EMD® SD70ACe-T4 Tier 4 freight locomotives are due to be delivered in the second half of 2026.
