Barrelet takes the helm at ONE

Japanese liner Ocean Network Express (ONE) enters a new era today with Till Ole Barrelet formally taking over as chief executive from founding boss Jeremy Nixon. Barrelet, formerly chief executive of Emirates Shipping Line, joined ONE as CEO-designate in May ahead of today’s planned handover. Nixon, who has led the Singapore-headquartered liner operator since its creation, moves into a senior adviser role. ONE was formed from the merger of the container operations of Japan’s K Line, MOL and NYK, and under Nixon grew into the world’s sixth-largest containerline, operating more than 260 ships with capacity of around 2.1m teu. In a post marking his first day, Barrelet said it was an honour to be appointed CEO and thanked Nixon for an eight-week “world tour” that took him through ONE’s country heads and regional teams. The experience, he said, reinforced that the carrier’s strength lay in its people. “I’m excited to lead this next chapter where we will define our future together,” Barrelet wrote, adding: “Let’s get ready for ONE 2.0.” Sam Chambers Starting out with the Informa Group in 2000 in Hong Kong, Sam Chambers became editor of Maritime Asia magazine as well as East Asia Editor for the world’s oldest newspaper, Lloyd’s List.
