Design work begins on another cargo project at Poland’s new airport

Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, the company delivering the Port Polska investment programme, has signed a contract with Industria Project to prepare the design documentation for another part of the cargo zone at Poland’s new airport – Cargo 3. This is the third contract awarded for the design of this area of the future airport. The airport is scheduled to open in 2032. The Cargo 3 project covers the development of a complex of facilities, together with supporting infrastructure, for a ground handling agent responsible for the comprehensive handling of cargo operations on the airport apron, including both export and import freight. The investment is intended to create a cargo transfer facility, enabling freight to be moved both from external facilities to aircraft and, conversely, from aircraft to external recipients. The value of the contract is PLN 7 million (net). The facility will combine warehousing, transhipment and logistics functions, in line with the principle of minimising storage time while maximising throughput. This will enable the fast and efficient handling of goods, which is essential for the smooth operation of air cargo services. The building will be located in the central-western part of the airport, within the area designated for cargo operations. Its location, directly adjacent to the boundary between the airside and landside zones, will provide convenient access to both the airport’s operational area and the wider surface transport network. This will facilitate the efficient movement of freight and cargo, while supporting transport operations both within the airport and beyond. The approved plans also make provision for future expansion. The contract also includes the design of a modern, functional and secure facility for the services responsible for the security and inspection of goods transported by air. The services building will be strategically located at the interface between the airport’s operational area and the public landside zone. This location will provide an optimal base for inspection, logistics and administrative activities related to customs clearance, while ensuring efficient access to both airport infrastructure and the areas serving airlines, customs agents and public authorities. The first contract for the design of Cargo 1 infrastructure was awarded to Cundall Polska, while the second, covering Cargo 2, was awarded to Budoprojekt Cooperative Enterprise. The design work for the cargo zone has been divided into three packages to reflect the scale of the project and the differing characteristics of the planned infrastructure. In line with the project schedule, the cargo facilities are expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2031.
