Transportation sector unemployment remained steady through June
The unemployment rate for the U.S. transportation sector was 3.8% in June, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), down 0.7 percentage points from the same month in 2025. Seasonally adjusted, the sector's unemployment rate was 4.4%, with no change from the same month in the prior year.
Unemployment in the transportation sector was lower than total unemployment in the United States in June. Overall, the unemployment rate was 4.4% in June, or 0.6 percentage point higher than the transportation sector, BTS reported. Seasonally adjusted, the U.S. unemployment rate in June was 4.2%, or 0.2 percentage point lower than the transportation industry. The rail transportation sector employed 149,900 people in June, up 0.1% from May's level but down 3.4% from June 2025's total. The transit and ground passenger transportation sector employed 489,800 individuals in June, down 0.5% from May and from June 2025. The unemployment rate represents the total number of unemployed people as a percentage of the entire labor force. An unemployed person's industry is determined by the last job they held in the workforce, BTS officials said.
