Occurrences are classified as either accidents or incidents. Across all transportation sectors, a total of 3,354 occurrences were reported to the TSB in 2025, TSB officials said in a press release. In the rail transportation sector, 1,163 occurrences were reported; 831 were accidents, a 7% decrease from 2024 and 17% below the 10-year average of 1,007. Of the 831 accidents, 82 involved dangerous goods, and three resulted in the release of dangerous goods, down from six dangerous goods releases reported in 2024 and the 10-year average of five. The largest proportion (35%) of rail accidents was non-main track derailments, followed by miscellaneous accidents (20%), crossing accidents (19%), trespasser accidents (11%), main track derailments (8%), non-main track collisions (6%) and main track collisions (1%). There were 71 total rail-related fatalities in 2025, up from 69 in 2024 and above the 10-year average of 64. Trespassing continues to be the leading cause of rail-related fatalities in Canada, accounting for 53 of the total fatalities, while crossing accidents resulted in 16 fatalities, TSB officials said.
